- The Club has many members.
- It provides an opportunity for members to share successes and challenges with building and driving street machines.
- The club, based in Lethbridge, was founded in 1976 and there are still two active founding members involved.
- Members of the club are active in planning and holding their major event, Street Machine Weekend each summer.
- They also travel as a group to other car shows around western Canada and the United States.
- The group also supports other organizations such as related car clubs, like the Southern Alberta Drag Racing Association, Southern Alberta Mopars Unlimited, the LeBarons, Coaldale Custom Cruisers and other non-profit organizations like the food bank, U of L Athletics Department and the Lethbridge Regional Hospital Foundation (Christmas Tree Fantasy). We are more than just a car club!!
About Street Machine Weekend - Street Machine weekend has been a yearly event since 1978.
- It takes place in Lethbridge, Alberta, on the second weekend in July.
- More than 1100 vehicles are expected to participate in the weekend, with thousands of other muscle cars gathered nearby in support.
- Events include:
- Friday - Alberta's Best Cruising: participants cruise the streets of Lethbridge to show off their vehicles to other drivers and local residents. Also known as Alberta's best cruise strip among street car enthusiasts, Mayor Magrath Drive and 3rd Avenue South will be the cruising area of choice for thousands of hot rods of all types.
- We are coordinating a controlled cruise on 3rd Ave. for Friday evening, approximately 7pm - 10 pm.
- Saturday - the 100 Foot Dash: Street machines try to beat the clock in this short dash. Held at the Lethbridge and District Exhibition grounds, the 100 Foot Dash is a key event on Street Machine Weekend.
- Sunday - Show and Shine, Galt Gardens. This event gives the car enthusiasts the opportunity to showcase their custom, restored or special interest vehicles to the public.
- The Annual Auto Cross Event at the Lethbridge Exhibition Grounds will be also held on this day. This event was a major success last year and we hope to make it bigger and better each year.
- Prizes: More than 50 trophies are awarded during the weekend. Participants vie for bragging rights including:
- Best restored vehicle
- Best of Show
- Fastest street car
- The event is organized entirely by the Street Wheelers Car Club. It is estimated that the members put in approximately 5,000 man-hours to plan and hold the show.
- The event in Lethbridge is promoted extensively through Alberta and advertised nationally to car enthusiasts. The Club promotes the city and the event at every car show its members attend.
- It is estimated that the event generates in excess of $750,000 into the retail economy of Lethbridge.
- There are approximately 30,000 spectators drawn to the event each year.
